Chocolate modak - Potluck party, cyber style September 28

   As the name goes by, this can also form one of your kid's favourite snack.  The special filling (Made by adding cocoa powder & choco chips to coconut-jaggery combo) is what makes the chocolate modak even more droolicious and with each bite, we can feel the chocolate flavour oscillating around our head!! :) :)  This modak is tooo tempting for a single try!!!!



I had to make this modak because of this month's pairing in potluck party, guest-hosted by nivedham's food blog and owned by Jagruti mam.  This chocolate modak is from Poornima's blog.  She has an excellant blog with delecious dishes, do go through her blog for the original version of chocolate modak.




Yield: 10 modaks
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 45 minutes

Ingredients required

  • Rice flour - 1 cup
  • Water - 11/4 cup
  • Salt - 1/2 tsp
  • Grated coconut - 1 cup
  • Jaggery - 1/4 cup
  • Brown sugar - 2 tbspn
  • Cocoa powder - 11/2 tbspn
  • Ghee - 2 tbspn
  • Chocolate chips - 1/4 cup

Method

Heat water on an vessel and add salt to it.  When water tends to boil, switch off the flame, add all rice flour give an gentle stir and leave to cool.  Meantime let us prepare the filling




In an deep-bottomed vessel, add in coconut, cocoa powder, jaggery, ghee, sugar and mix them.  Stir them continously till they form thick-halwa like consistency.  







This will take around  fifteen minutes on a simmer flame.  Let this cool, after which add chocolate chips to the filling and let it rest.

 


Meantime, oil the rice flour-water paste and knead them into fine dough.  




Divide into ten medium sized balls and add in filling





Round them into circle with oil- greased palm and raise an notch resembling an modak


If you want, you can press them with fork to obtain an pattern


Steam them for fifteen to twenty minutes on a idly cooker till done.  Serve hot.
